Windows 8 is an operating system developed by Microsoft, released on October 26, 2012. It marked a significant departure from its predecessors in several ways:
Start Screen: Windows 8 introduced a new Start screen with a tile-based interface, known as Metro UI (later renamed Modern UI). This was a major shift from the traditional Start menu and aimed to provide a more touch-friendly experience.
Touch Integration: Designed with touchscreens in mind, Windows 8 optimized its interface for tablets and other touch devices, featuring larger icons and gesture-based controls.
Windows Store: It included the Windows Store for downloading and purchasing apps, akin to app stores on mobile devices.
Charms Bar: A new feature called the Charms bar provided quick access to search, share, and settings options. It was accessible by swiping from the right edge of the screen or moving the mouse to the top-right corner.
Desktop and Modern UI: Windows 8 retained the traditional desktop environment but combined it with the new Modern UI. Users could switch between the Start screen and the desktop.
Performance and Security: Windows 8 included improvements in boot times and performance. It also featured enhanced security features such as Windows Defender and Secure Boot.
Removal of Start Menu: The classic Start menu was removed, which was a controversial change. Instead, users interacted with the Start screen, though this shift was met with mixed reactions.
